Anthony Anderson, executive producer and star of the hit TV show black-ish, and host of Eating America, is taking on a new role this fall as the 2015 national spokesperson for Life Insurance Awareness Month. The annual campaign, which takes place in September, is coordinated by the nonprofit organization Life Happens to encourage the more than 100 million Americans who do not have adequate life insurance to get the coverage they need.

Cost is the reason most Americans give for not owning life insurance, according to the 2015 Insurance Barometer Study, released today by non-profit Life Happens and LIMRA. Yet, 80 percent of consumers misjudge the price for term life insurance, with Millennials overestimating the cost by 213%, and Gen Xers overestimating the cost by 119%.

Two decades ago, seven insurance producer organizations recognized that more needed to be done to educate the public about the importance of insurance planning and the value of working with a professional insurance agent. To more effectively respond to issues plaguing the industry, they came together and formed what has become Life Happens, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping Americans take personal financial responsibility through the ownership of life insurance and related products.

Hannah Schwartz had just celebrated her 10th birthday when her mother passed away. The emotional hardship her family experienced was quickly compounded with mounting financial burdens to cover burial and funeral expenses. Hannah’s mother did not have life insurance and eventually her father was forced to sell the house she grew up in to make ends meet. Hannah recognizes just how much her family has had to sacrifice. For her, it has meant forgoing non-paid internships in her chosen field of study to work part-time jobs to keep her education a priority.

Younger Americans, including “millennials” age 25-34, show the highest level of concern across all generations for common financial planning issues, including saving for retirement, paying for a child’s education, and burdening others with final expenses. The 2014 Insurance Barometer Study, released today by nonprofit Life Happens (formerly the LIFE Foundation) and LIMRA, found that while sentiment has improved slightly among the overall U.S. population, younger consumers are noticeably more anxious about their financial plans, despite being best suited to take actions now that can make a difference.
